Off Topic..... But Important.

I have been hesitant to write about this, but it's something that's very important to me, and should be important to everyone.

Recently on social media I have noticed that since Emma Watson's speech at the UN regarding the #HeforShe Campaign, that celebrities and people alike have been either showing their support for the movement, or pointing out the flaws it has.

I am personally ecstatic that so many people are getting behind this movement. While I agree that Emma Watson's speech had some problems at it's core, it made a lot of great points.

Feminism has become a dirty word, Feminists of the 60's and 70's were radical, and to be fair, many of them did promote man-hating. I do still see a lot of self proclaimed "feminists" blaming the entire male gender for the actions of a few horrible men. These people are not feminists. The same way you cannot blame "Muslims" for 9/11. Blaming a group of people for the actions of a few who fit in that group is unwarranted and isolating.

To me, being a true feminist (a word I am proud to use. I have hope that in the future this word won't have such negative connotations) is being someone who believes that women should have equal rights to men.

I am a feminist for so many reasons. The list is literally never ending, but I would like to include a few to help you understand why I feel so strongly about this.

I am a feminist because female children are still being sold as child brides. It is almost 2015, how are we still allowing this to happen?

I am a feminist because when women that I care about are sexually assaulted, other men and women ask what they were wearing as if wearing a mini skirt gives you a right to touch someone's body.

I am a feminist because when I say I am excited to be a stay at home mother, other women laugh or tell me that my dream is stupid.

I am a feminist because the men and boys in my life are made to feel like less of men when they show emotion, while women are made to feel like less of women when they don't.
'
I am a feminist because I am tired of gender roles. I am tired of there being "girl" toys and "boy" toys in happy meals. When I was younger I enjoyed playing with trucks and super heroes and my brother occasionally played with Barbies. Let children be children, and play with what they want.

I am a feminist because in some countries, women are still played less for the same work as their male counterparts.

I am a feminist because when a female has a short haircut it is "dykey" or "boyish". The outdated idea that women must have long hair and traditionally feminine features to be a women is stupid. What makes you a woman is how you are inside, not what you portray on the outside.

I am a feminist because women are sexualized by the media and in their daily lives. Because when I was in high school I was told that the shirts I wore, exactly the same as the other girls, were inappropriate because I was well endowed. I was a child. It was not my fault that my body grew much more quickly, and I was made to feel ashamed of it.

This is a extremely short list and just a handful of reasons why I identify as a feminist.

I could sit here and point out that Emma Watson's speech could've had some rephrasing. I understand that she aimed some of it at men (which some people were offended by) but to me, much of the talk of feminism needs to be aimed at men. We need them on our side. They make up 50% of the population, and whether or not we like it, right now they fill up most of our leadership roles. We need them to be fighting for our cause. Like Emma said, it is their cause as well. What I need is for me, and all the other humans on this planet to be free. Right now, gender inequality is imprisoning us, and we all need to be fighting to break from it.

I understand that this topic is controversial (though to me that seems ridiculous) but I felt that I had to say something and join the conversation. To bring the conversation back to what made me write this post, Emma Watson's speech, she said that it is not the word feminist that is important, but the feelings behind it. What I hope is that although you may not brand yourself with the label of feminist, that you commit to joining a fight to improve all of our lives, and the lives of generations to come.

Product Review : Rimmel Wake Me Up Foundation

Finally a new blog post! I've been so busy this summer but I'll be posting regularly again now that it's September.

Today I have a review on the Rimmel Wake Me Up Foundation, I am a fan of drugstore foundations as I find they do the job just as good (sometimes better) than an expensive one. Not to say that I don't love expensive foundations (I'm partial to the Make Up Forever HD) but for day to day use I prefer drugstore. I have used the Revlon Colorstay for Normal/Oily Skin for quite some time, and it's my absolute favourite, but when I ran out, I thought I would give something new a try. I have been a devotee of the Wake Me Up Concealer since it came out, and I assumed I would love the foundation as well.

I am so disappointed in this, because I expected it to be the same formulation as the concealer, but in a foundation form, given that they have the same name. There are lots of things I don't like about this product so I'm just going to put them in a handy little list below.

- The scent. This is so strongly perfumed and it really bothers me! It's like a floral scent, but it's so tacky. I don't mind when foundations are scented, but this one lasts so long I can still smell it hours later and I just really hate the smell.

- The staying power. I prime using the Maybelline Baby Skin Primer, and I have to powder using a powder foundation over this. If I just use translucent powder I am so shiny and this goes so patchy. It doesn't stay, it slips around after 2-3 hours and it looks gross.

- The finish. I would really not recommend purchasing this product if you have anything other than dry skin. It literally has glitter in it. If you don't like looking dewy to the point of greasy then stay away from this foundation. It is not even that you get shinier throughout the day (which does happen if you don't blot excessively) but that you look shiny the second you put it on. To me this foundation is not dewy, it is shiny which is not a look I am personally going for.

Now after all the negativity (Sorry Rimmel, I still love you) I do have a few positives!

- The coverage. The coverage on this foundation is great. A little goes a long way, and you get a fantastic medium coverage with one layer, and it is easily buildable to a full coverage with an extra layer.

- The packaging. Not many drugstore foundations come with a pump and I get so annoyed when I accidentally pour a ton of product all over everything because it is just an open top. This has a pump that works beautifully and doesn't get clogged while distributing the right amount of product.

So after all of that, I will not be repurchasing this foundation. It could definitely work for someone with drier skin or who prefers an extremely dewy look.

Does anyone have an recommendations for foundations for super oily skin? Or am I just sticking to my Colorstay?

Gone To The Lake

Recently I went away to a lake for the day, to enjoy the sunshine and the water and just have a nice relaxing day.Since I was only there for a day I didn't want to pack too much, so I just brought what I deemed was essential!

1. Vans Off The Wall Black Snapback
I always have a hat when I'm at the beach or near the water because my hair just gets so tangly and it's an easy way to tame it. I just throw it on backwards, and push a little bit of my hair through the hole.

2. Infusium Leave In Treatment Hair Treatment
See description above. My hair is long, and has some color in it, so it is quick to tangle and after a long day with wind and water and sand, it's nearly impossible to get a brush through it without the help of Infusium. I just spray a very generous amount all over my hair and leave it in for a couple of minutes, then grab my brush and attempt to get through the disaster that is my hair.

3. H&M  Black Jersey Crop Top
I love this shirt. It's just a super light, airy, slighty oversized and so comfortable. It's a great piece to have to just toss over your bathing suit and it still looks really cute.

4. H&M Tortoise Shell Sunglasses
My favourite sunglasses that I own.You definitely need some good eye wear when you are out in the sun. These are oversized, which I love because my eyes are quite large and I think it looks odd when I wear small ones. They are a deep warm brown, and they would compliment everyone's skin tone.

5. Neutrogena Beach Defense Sunscreen SPF 30
I bought this sunscreen a while ago, because I was sick of using oily formulas that leave a residue on the skin, and I find that this one doesn't. It does say "body" on it, but personally I have never bought into the whole separate "face" and "body" sunscreens. I don't want to pay $50 for a sunscreen that is apparently formulated for my face. I have used this on my face many, many times and I have never had a breakout. It's a great price and it does the job.

6. Simple Hydrating Light Moisturizer
This is my favourite everyday mosturizer so I bring it with me everywhere anyway. My face gets extremely dry after being out in the sun for so long, so I just toss this in my bag and slather it on whenever my face starts to get dry.

7. H&M Pink Bandeau Bikini Top
I bought this last year, and love it. It comes with straps that go on like a bra, which is great, because halter tops don't provide enough support for my chest. The straps are removable so I usually leave them off because I like to be tan line free on my shoulders. This top is so cute, and the color really makes you look tanned and the cut is very flattering on your arms and chest.

8. H&M Lime Green Bikini Bottom
I also bought these last year. I'm a total sucker for mix and match bathing suits, and this one is my favourite because it makes me look like a watermelon (is that the fruit I want to look like on the beach?). I like the shape of them, I have a more curvy figure, and these bottoms provide the coverage that I need.

9. LaSenza Body Kiss Coconut Body Lotion
I bring this for the same reason I bring face lotion. Sand, sun and wind exposure take the same toll on the skin on your body as they do on your face, and this smells nice and is very moisturizing.

10. Hawaiian Tropic Tanning Oil
I'm probably going to take a lot of flack for saying that I use tanning oil, but I am pale, and I enjoy being tanned. It makes me feel more confident, and whether or not I get a little color is my choice. I use the oil sparingly, only for about a half hour when I first go out in the sun, and then I apply sunscreen if I am going to be outside for longer.

11. Vintage Rainbow Tie Dyed High Waisted Shorts
I bought these as jeans at a local thrift store, and cut them up, bleached them and tie dyed them in my backyard. These are my favourite shorts that I own, they make any outfit cute and I just toss them on with the black crop top, and I'm good to go.

Hope you enjoyed this post, and that you spend your days by the water, enjoying the sun!

Haul

So I might've been a little irresponsible and gone shopping, I just can't help myself! Everything is so cute, and I justified it because I needed a few new things to wear to work.

The first place I went to was H&M, which is my current favourite place to shop, and surprisingly I only picked up one thing (usually I leave there with at least a full bag) but it was so adorable I could not leave it behind.

It the cutest little peplum top with short sleeves and a beautiful floral pattern. The colors in it are so nice and summery. I think this will be super cute to break up an all black outfit (my staple) and would be gorgeous with a light pink lip.

H&M - $17.99 CAD

The next thing I picked up was an awesome military style vest from Old Navy. I've been looking for one of these for ages but they always seems so expensive for the quality that they are, so I was super stoked when I saw this one on sale.

The color is a little darker in real life but it's a nice olive green and it has a cinch waist which I love. These work great on my body because I have a smaller waist and larger hips, so I can draw attention to my waist but camouflage my hips.

I got it in a medium so it wasn't too oversized, and I think it will look great on casual days with a tee and leggings and pair of cute boots.

Old Navy - $25.00 CAD (sale)

The last place I hit on my little excursion was Zara. This was my first experience with Zara as I always find it a little bit daunting. I always see British YouTubers with such gorgeous pieces from there, and when I walked by they were having a huge sale, so I had to go in.

This is literally the softest dress I have ever felt in my entire life. I never ever want to take it off. It is slightly drop waist, with horizontal black and off white/grey stripes. It is from the TRF section at Zara, which I think might be a different collection they have? Someone let me know! Anyway I love this dress, it's going to be the easiest most comfortable thing I ever wear.

Zara - $15.99 CAD (sale)

The last thing I got from Zara was another pair of jeans, because I only have 2 that I actually wear, and I was so happy that I found a pair that fit and were comfortable and actually flattering.

Now I'm not sure what the actual style name is called but the tag says Slim Fit, Cropped Leg and High Rise. This is the best fit for me ever. I don't particularly like skinny jeans cause I have large thighs, so a slim fit or a straight fit is great. I always roll my jeans up so they are cropped, so these pair just save me a little time. All in all I just love the fit, the wash and the style. I think they are so cute and they really flatter my body.

Anyone else done some shopping lately?

Urban Decay Naked Flushed Palette

I went to Sephora a couple weeks ago because I was bored of my current blushes (the product I have the least of in my collection) and while I didn't have anything particular in mind, I knew I wanted a pink toned color with a subtle shimmer. After wandering aimlessly and 40 swatches later, I found the Urban Decay Naked Flushed Palettes, which comes in 4 different colors. I looked at all the palettes and the one I really loved is Streak.

Each palette has a bronzer, a blush and a highlighter. This one also appealed to me because the bronzer was matte. I almost never contour, but I still love matte bronzers cause I like the focus to be on where I've put my hightlight. Speaking of highlighters this one is lovely, a nice champangne-y pink shade. I like powder highlights because my skin is fairly oily, so I find that they last a lot longer on me.

I really had a hard time taking a good photo where the light didn't reflect off the shimmer and make the entire thing look like a white powder, but this is the best I could do :( It really is a lovely palette, and super practical cause you have 3 products in one place. It's Urban Decay, and I personally always think the quality of their products is fantastic. This is $35.00 CAD at Sephora and it's also available online.

I'm going to enjoy making myself into a bronze goddess this summer with this one :)

Vans x Star Wars Collab

Last week I went downtown and while I was wandering, I ended up in the Vans store. When I was in there I saw that there was a new collection that was Star Wars. I cannot even explain in words my love for Star Wars. Adjectives do not exist to describe my love. I also love shoes, so this is the best combination of things ever. There was a black and white pair that I really liked (paisley with Stormtroopers) but they didn't have my size :( But then I saw the coolest pair ever, that I hadn't even noticed was part of the collection, the Star Wars influence was so subtle.

They are floral, with pink hawaiian looking flowers and a light blue background. They are so summery and cute, but they best part is when you look closely.

When you look close, you can see Yoda. Yoda just chilling in the flowers. This is so cool, and while I know these aren't everyone's cup of tea, I absolutely love them. I like that they are girly but they still have a nerd vibe, which is exactly my personality summed up.

Here is the info in case you are interested in buying them (I totally recommend you do if you like Star Wars because they have some other really cool designs) and they retail for $65.00 CAD, which I thought was a great price for a good pair of summer shoes.

Anyone else love Star Wars? They're classics.

Well, I'm off to prance around and point out the tiny Yodas feeling the power of the force on my feet. Have a great day everyone!

New MAC Lipsticks

I am so excited about these, because believe it or not, I have never owned a MAC lipstick before this. I'm always so intimidated when I go in the store, so I just tend to avoid it. As a YouTube junkie and avid blog reader, I always see beauty gurus rocking the most gorgeous shades, and they are usually MAC.

So as fate would have it, my lovely best friend gave me a gift card for my birthday, and being unable to spend the money anywhere but MAC forced me to suck it up and head on in.

I went to the location in my local mall and was pleasantly surprised. The girl helping me was wonderful, she listened to what I wanted and was completely honest with me about what she thought worked and what didn't. I was looking for a really good nude, as I've had quite the difficult time finding one that suits my skintone, and after going through a few swatches we found the perfect one.

We ended up deciding on Jubilee, which is a Lustre. Let me tell you, I am devoted to matte lipsticks but this formulation is so beautiful. It is so easy to wear, as I can literally just put it on with no liner and occasionally, with no mirror :) This shade is truly a "my lips but better" because I naturally have quite pink lips and the brown in this color neutralizes the pink very nicely.

After I had found Jubilee, I decided that I needed a new bright color for summer (the term needed being used very loosely, I have quite the collection of lip products) so the lovely girl there pointed out that they had a few of the limited edition Osbourne collection lipsticks left, and she grabbed one of the Kelly ones that she thought I would like.

She was spot on. I love this color so much. The pigmentation is absolutely insane, and it's basically a neon blue toned pink. It's called Kelly Yum Yum and it is a satin finish. While I have a ton of bright pink lipsticks, this one really stands out among the bunch. It adds such a nice touch to my all black outfits and I love that it makes my teeth look quite white!

Packaging (I love the Kelly one)

Swatches
top- Jubilee
bottom- Kelly Yum Yum

to be completely honest, the swatches don't do either justice, so you should definitely head to your nearest MAC and give them a try!
